
Rules

Registration & Eligibility
All entries must be submitted by a registered dance studio using our
online registration system through Dance Genie.
● If you are registered but have failed to submit payment by the
requested deadline, your registration will not be processed.
● Each dancer may only represent one studio per event.
● Each dancer must enter using one name; the use of two names will
result in disqualification.
● All participants and attendees must always uphold a spirit of respect,
fairness, and professionalism.
Registration Deadlines
• Please register at least 30 days before the event. We never
overbook—once a show is full, registration will close.
• Entries marked “in progress” at the 30 day mark without completed payment aren’t
considered confirmed.
• Late entries may be accepted upon approval
• A $10 late fee will be applied if not paid in full by 30 days before the event.
Payment Details
• All payments must be made by the posted deadline.
• Payments submitted less than 30 days of the event must be paid by
cashier’s check, money order, or credit card—no exceptions.
• Payments mailed after the deadline must be sent overnight with
tracking information emailed, and include a cashier’s check/money
order or credit card payment.
• Returned checks will incur a $35 fee.
Refund Policy
• Once the 30-day deadline has passed, entry fees are
non-refundable for any reason.
• Refunds or credits will only be considered for documented
injury or illness and will be issued directly to the studio.
• If an event is canceled for reasons beyond our control, refunds
will be provided.
Liability Waivers
• All participants must have a signed Ascend Dance Experience
Liability Waiver on file before competing.

Age Divisions
-
A dancer’s age is calculated as of January 1st of the competition year. Group routines are placed by the average age, rounded down.
-
Any group including a dancer aged 20+ will automatically compete in the adult category.
-
Proof of age may be required on-site.


Performance Levels
-
Studio Directors will place dancers in the proper levels.
-
Ascend reserves the right for judges to review routine levels and adjust accordingly.
-
Solo level = dancer’s level.
-
Group level = If 50% or more of a routine's dancers fall within a designated level, the routine will be placed in that level.
-
Judges may reclassify a routine into a more appropriate level if needed.


Routine Categories
-
Routines must fit within one of the following classifications...

-
Acrobatic Rule: No more than 3 acro tricks allowed in a routine unless registered in Acro, Open, Production. A trick is defined as both feet passing over the head in midair (aerials, back handsprings, etc.).

Divisions & Time Limits
-
Additional time available for purchase (up to 1 minute for most routines; 3–5 minutes for Productions).
-
Routines exceeding the time limit without approval will be penalized.


Judging & Scoring
-
Routines are evaluated by three qualified judges.
-
Each judge scores out of 100 points based on:
-
Technique – 40 points
-
Musicality - 20 points
-
Overall Impression – 20 points
-
Choreography – 20 points
-
Final scores determine the adjudication level.
-
A 2-point deduction will apply for major rule violations (illegal props, offensive content).
-
“Content Awareness” notices may be given for insensitive or age-inappropriate material (no point deduction).

Awards
-
All entries will receive an adjudication award.
-
Overall High Scores are given by age, level, and division.
-
Soloists are eligible to place in overall awards with only their highest-scoring routine.
-
The number of overall placements (Top 3, Top 5, or Top 10) will be determined by the total number of entries in each age group, routine size, and performance level.
-
Cash prizes will be awarded to the Apex Studio, Apex Honor, and Apex Artistry Winners. Cash Prizes will also be awarded to Top Overall Productions 13 & up and 12 & under.
-
Special Awards may include:

Judge’s Awards for selected performers in each dance session.

Judge’s Choice Awards for solos, and duos/trios per level.

Choreography – outstanding choreography

Technique – excellent technique

Spotlight - commands the stage with superior presence

The 5 highest-scoring routines from each studio will be used to determine the highest-scoring studio.

This studio displays artistic and innovative pieces.

Ascend Improv Challenge
-
Dancers may register in the lobby of the competition. The mini competition will take place just before the awards. Dancers will take the stage in groups of five and create movement on the spot. One standout performer (8 and under, 9-12, 13-19) will be selected by the judges to receive the Improv Award.

Ascend Photogenic Challenge
-
With a small fee, studio directors should submit a headshot, either color or black and white. All submissions must be received before the event.

Ascend Costume Challenge
-
With a small fee, studio directors should submit a costume photo. All submissions must be received before the event.

Props
-
All props must be easily movable and supervised by a studio representative.
-
Props should be brought on and off stage promptly, with a maximum transition time of two minutes.
-
Props may only remain in the wings for a brief time before the routine, as determined by the stage manager.
-
Props must be cleared from the wings immediately after the performance concludes.
-
Props should be stored in locations that do not interfere with foot or vehicle traffic and must not be kept backstage, in the lobby, or any other inconvenient area.
-
The use of fire, swords, knives, guns, live animals, powders, liquids, glitter, paint, sand, or similar materials is strictly prohibited.
-
Routines that cause delays due to props may incur a two-point penalty.
-
Prop coordinators must always comply fully with all backstage crew instructions.
-
All props must be able to fit through a standard doorway measuring 36 inches wide.
-
Props cannot be stored in the venue prior to the day of the performance.
-
Any prop that elevates a dancer 12 feet or more off the ground is considered unsafe and is not allowed.
-
Fog or smoke machines and strobe lights are not permitted during performances.
-
We reserve the right to restrict prop sizes based on venue requirements.
-
Ascend will not be responsible for building, transporting, or legality of any props.
-
No parking in loading docks or in marked areas will be permitted.

Music
-
Upload music in advance through the registration portal.
-
Studios must keep at least 2 backup copies (USB or device).
-
No CDs accepted.
-
Music must be free of offensive language or suggestive content.

Code of Conduct
-
Coaching from the audience or wings is strictly prohibited. Could result in a 1-point reduction.
-
No photography or videography during performances.
-
No jumping off the stage or approaching judges at any time.
-
Studio directors may submit protests (in writing) within 30 minutes of a performance.
-
Smoking must occur at least 50 yards away from the venue.

General Info
-
No cash refunds; credits may be issued for pre-event scratches. In the event of injury or illness, a doctor's note is required for credit towards a future Ascend event (at the discretion of Ascend).

All attendees must comply with venue policies.
-
Ascend Dance Experience is not responsible for lost items or personal injuries.
-
All entries will be required to complete a waiver of liability prior to the event.
-
Ascend reserves the right to cancel or change locations and dates at any time due to unforeseen circumstances.
-
In the event Ascend has a cancellation, we will give a full refund.

Title Category
-
Ascend Dance Experience offers a special Title Category for soloists who wish to compete for recognition beyond standard adjudication and overall placement. Title contestants are judged on performance, quality, and presence. An additional fee is required for title entries.
Eligibility & Rules
-
Available for Competitive and Pre Professional levels only.
-
Available in Mini, Petite, Junior, Pre-Teen, Teen, and Senior age divisions.
-
A Miss. and Mr. will be awarded in each category.
-
Only one solo may be entered per dancer for the title.
-
Adult age divisions are not eligible.
-
Each title performance is scored and ranked separately from standard solo adjudication.
Scoring
-
A combined score from the solo performance and judge impressions determines the winner.
-
If only one dancer is entered in a division, they must receive a minimum qualifying score to win the title.
Routine Categories
Ballet
Pointe

Schedule
-
Schedules will be posted at least seven days prior to the event.
-
Schedules must be followed unless approved by Ascend.
-
Failure to follow schedules could result in loss of award participation.
-
Any changes that need attention must be addressed immediately upon receiving the schedule.

Arrival Time -
-
Participants need to be at the venue and ready to perform 2 hours prior to their performance time.
-

If competition is running ahead, you may be expected to perform early.

Incomplete Performance
-
Dancers may perform a second time but will only be adjucated.
